Konferenz in Budapest zum 15. Todestag von Géza Alföldy

Budapest-Heidelberg, October 27, 2026

Dear Colleagues,

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the passing of Géza Alföldy on November 6, 2011, in Athens. He was a pioneering scholar in ancient history, Roman social history, and Latin epigraphy, whose work shaped the field internationally for decades. A professor at Heidelberg University, he was a teacher, mentor, and friend to many of us. His scholarly achievements, perspectives, and personal influence remain vividly present in the work of his students, colleagues, and the new generations of researchers engaging with his studies.

To mark the 15th anniversary of his death, the Institute of Archaeological Sciences at ELTE Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest and the Department of Classical Philology at Pázmány Péter Catholic University, Budapest are organizing a conference dedicated to the memory and scholarly legacy of Professor Géza Alföldy. Researchers from Hungary who belonged to his circle of friends and students, as well as those closely associated with his work, have been invited to speak.
